Springmaid Pier has been voted “Best of the Beach” many times over the years. It’s one of South Carolina’s longest and most accommodating piers, at 1,060 feet long, 36 feet wide, with a 110- foot T at the end. A Myrtle Beach landmark, this pier is the site of numerous fishing tournaments and offers one of the best views of the entire Grand Strand. Springmaid Pier holds the record for the largest Spanish mackerel catch at 125 pounds! In 1948 Colonel H.B. Springs purchased 30 acres of oceanfront property in Myrtle Beach and began building Springmaid Beach Resort, now Doubletree Resort by Hilton Myrtle Beach Oceanfront, which was structured similar to military barracks. Guests brought their own towels and sheets, and were required to make their own beds. A large cafeteria was built and the food was prepared at the commissary in Lancaster, SC, and trucked to the beach daily. Springmaid Resort, was originally designed as a getaway for the many southern mill workers in the central and upstate areas of South Carolina. In 1954 the original fishing pier was built and destroyed by Hurricane Hazel that same year. In 1959 the pier was rebuilt and soon after was destroyed by an airplane. Springmaid Beach’s first private rooms were built in 1966 In 1973 the administration office was built and four two-story buildings of private guestrooms were constructed along Springmaid Boulevard. These buildings were the first at the resort to have air conditioning. A new pier was built on the north end of Springmaid Beach but was destroyed in 1989 by Hurricane Hugo. That same year the pier was reconstructed and remains standing today offering vacationing guests a fabulous spot for fishing and a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean. Over the years, other recreational facilities were added to the resort such as swimming pools, shuffleboard courts and game rooms. Some of the older rooms were demolished and construction began on two additional three-story buildings. Today, this newly-remodeled oceanfront resort and conference center has award-winning service, six pools, two lazy rivers, and endless activities for adults and children.
